Renga Full Circle
(May 3, 2005)
Obviously spring—
the birds hum their melodies
in the heavy air.
Fighting the humidity
a pair of open windows.
Absorbed in his work
encouragement from music—
The smell of rain drops.
He takes a break from poker
to appreciate the scent.
Flattering red dress
floating past his card table
a trail of perfume.
A mix of exotic fruits
and the sweet smell of woman.
The sultan's chambers—
All of his freedom and joy
he takes for granted.
Men die on the battlefield
fill up a thousand graveyards.
What will run out first
Men, or a place to put them?
Grave keeper wonders.
Surveying his old tool shed
dull and rusty instruments
secured by webbing
a fly struggles to break free.
The spider's mansion.
Deep in the autumn forest
the smell of coming winter.
The over-stressed bear
After seeing the first snowflake
is relieved to sleep.
The mischievous children
watch as he enters the cave.
An expedition—
Favorite action figure
lost in the darkness.
Gathering around the sewer
pulling with all of their strength.
Gazing longingly
the dog fogs up the window
with his rapid breaths.
A dog walk interrupted—
by an emergency call.
Obviously spring—
the birds hum their melodies
in the heavy air.
